Filming blog

Throughout the weekend my partner Lucas and I actually didn’t film. We haven’t started filming due to one of us being busy while the other is free. My partner and I already have most of the planning done. All we need to do now is to go out and actually film. The main reason we didn’t get to film because my partner and I were both unavailable to film over the weekend. While I do wish we did film this blog is a requirement and will have to be published whether we filmed or not. During our last project which was the commercial, filming was a pretty smooth process. We went around the school and just filmed shots based on the storyboard. The difference in this commercial is that now we are going to actually shoot off-campus so both my partner and I are going to have to schedule a get-together and film our video.
What we have planned is us meeting up at a nearby mall and film in a parking garage. This setting helps us create the dark tone we want to set for our music video. My partner and I are kind of disappointed that we didn’t get to film already. Personally I’m the type of person that likes filming as soon as possible and editing it to its maximum potential. The editing process is going to be much longer now so we definitely have to get to filming as soon as possible. We now have a big thanksgiving break that will give us the opportunity to film without worrying about school, extracurricular activities, and homework. By doing this blog now we actually don’t have to write about our experiences filming and we just worry about completion. Our music video will hopefully be everything we want it to be, with that Melodramatic, dark tone we’re looking for. Due to the fact that we are filming off campus, this will give us the opportunity to film in cool places rather than being restricted to just school.
I want to start filming right away. Our footage should probably be done by next week and I hope it's going to turn out as good as the last one, if not better. I'm really proud of our commercial and hoping our next project can top it. The editing was so fun and the best part of the editing process is seeing your project come together. Although it’s not a competition we really hope we can have the best music video. instead of getting a mediocre passing grade we hope our creativity and success lead us to greatness. This class allows us to venture into the unknown and experience creativity through art. We can’t turn in any projects less than spectacular. And although we missed our opportunity to film this weekend we sure will try to film this following weekend and deliver one of the best music videos ever.

Music Video: Planning

Location: My partner and I are planning to film in locations with minimal lighting to get a sad vibe. Most likely going to film in the Fort Lauderdale area. To catch the aesthetic of the video, we are going to film in locations that also catch the vibe. This is important.

Health and Safety: due to the fact that both I and my partner are both high school students, health and safety are both important factors in this project. Besides getting a good grade, both I and my partner's health are priorities. One way we are going to take account of health and safety in this project is to be aware of our surroundings and not go in dangerous areas.

Props: Props are very important when it comes to music videos. There aren’t any primary props we are going to use in our music video though. Due to the fact that we are going to tell a story with the music video and props aren’t going to be needed.

Costumes: For our costumes, we are going to be using normal street clothes. Obviously nothing too formal but nothing too casual. Just what a normal person would wear on the street. Jeans, hoodies, t-shirts, etc.

Schedule: The schedule is attached below...

Music video: Storyboard

We are currently in the pre-production phase. In the last blog I discussed the plan and develop ideas of the music video. Before we begin filming we first must compose a storyboard. We don't want to waste any time during the duration of this whole process. Lucas and I want a darker more mysterious feel to the music video. We want it to capture pain, depression, anxiety, and stress but with a good color scheme and flow. We kind of want it to release a euphoric feeling with a slightly psychedelic undertone to it. The subject has emotional and mental issues that reflex on the video.
The first twelve seconds are multiple jump cut shots of buildings and places that introduce the city vibe into the commercial. The first twelve seconds will be filmed at different locations.

They will also be filmed at different times of the day. Scene two, seconds thirteen to nineteen are a medium close up shot of half the subject's face and body is shown. The subject is looking straight ahead with no emotions. behind the subject is a beautiful sky after the sunsets. We hope we can get a good shot of the sky having an ocean blue look to it. We really want to execute that gloomy look we want.
Scene seconds twenty to twenty-seven will be over shoulder shots of society. People will be laughing, being happy, and talking. We hope scenes like this introduce the depression portion of the music video. Scene three, seconds twenty-eight to thirty-three will be the subject walking down a dark ally way or hall. We have to make sure we are cautious and safe throughout the whole process and we are still looking for the perfect location to film this scene.

Scene four, seconds thirty-four to forty will be a tracking shot of the subject running.
Once the subject stops running it will look confused as if it does not know where it is.
That will become scene fives part, seconds forty to forty-two will be a close-up dutch shot of the subject falling backward which will be the transition of the next scene. Scene six, seconds forty-three to forty-four will be the subject in the bed sitting up. Scene seven, seconds forty-five to forty-seven will be a small pan of the subjects close-up. Scene eight, seconds forty-nine to fifty will be a close-up of the subject standing during the day and night showing how everything feels the same every day, all the time. Scene nine, seconds fifty to 60 or one minutes will be the subject standing in rain crying. Scene ten, minute 1:01 to 1:04 will be the subject over the shoulder shot looking at orange pill capsules. Scene eleven, minutes 1:05 to 1:08 is a medium shot of the subject dancing around finally being happy. Scene twelve, minutes 1:08-1:09 will be multiple jump shots of a close up of the subject's facial expressions. Scene thirteen will be the title of the song with the names of my partner and I.

NEW MUSIC VIDEO

MUSIC VIDEO
Our commercial is complete. Lucas and I both had a good experience throughout the duration of the commercial. We used our own editing software due to pinnacle studios being extremely slow. We feel because we used our own it actually came out better than anticipated. Editing on our phones, working with the software we already are familiar with gave us the freedom and ability to excel in the editing department while some classmates were incredibly unfamiliar with the editing process. We made a storyboard but when we started to film, more ideas came into our head which made us stray away from our original storyboard. Other than that, our commercial was a success. Now we are transitioning into shooting our next project. This project is going to be a music video.

The song that we will choose for our music video is going to be Day n Nite by Kid Cudi. The reason we selected this song is due to the fact that it's a good song overall. The song had no explicit language and just a really chill song. This song was very popular when it was released back in 2008. It's considered to be a part of the Rap/Hip-Hop genre. While this song already has a music video, we are going to take a different approach to the visuals. The music video for this song shows Kid Cudi, walking around in the city, and drawings appear as if he were seeing it. This music video conveys the figurative aspect of the song, but I think my partner and I will take the lyrics more literally. The editing is very present in the actual music video and it features lots of tracking shots. Because my partner and I haven't really decided what our music video is going to feature exactly, I can't tell you what type of editing our video is going to have.

Rap/Hip-Hop is a common genre now in the 21st Century, because of this, there is now certain conventions that a Rap/Hip-Hop music video should have.

1. Costumes that are usually featured in Rap/Hip-Hop is designer clothes for men and minimal clothing for women to show wealth.

2. While lighting varies for each different music video, the usual lighting is very bright and visible to clearly see every single thing in the music video.

3. Usually for the acting of a typical rap music video is just the artist of the song either lip-syncing his song or they sometimes hire actors to portray the message of the video.

4. Makeup for a typical rap music videos is very minimal or used to make the people in the videos look as natural as possible.

5. Props for a usual rap music video varies on the song. In reality, the props featured in the music video helps to portray the underlying message of the song.

6. Set design for a typical rap music video is usually somewhere exotic. This is done so rappers can show off their wealth and portrays to the audience, "Look at me, I'm at some cool place!"

While there are conventions in Rap/Hip-Hop music video, I doubt me and my partner will actually follow the conventions of the genre because I don't usually enjoy watching these type of videos. So for our project we will stick to making a nicer music video.

Commercial Blog

For the past week, I've been editing on my phone. I attempted using pinnacle studios. When I got into the website it was acting extremely blotchy and weird. My partner Lucas and I haven't been able to edit at school but rather editing at home. I've been using an app called Cute cut pro in order to get the commercial to where I want it to be. At first I added all the footage via google photos. I previously put all the footage into google photos on a school computer while dumping.  I have google photos on my phone so I went to the time where we uploaded the footage on to it. I exported it onto cute cut pro, my editing software.  It took about two minutes to import all the footage onto the editing software. Then I began to place the videos into the order I wanted to while maintaining the storyboards format.

I started cutting the clips down so that the commercial did not have any extra footage it didn't need to have. I tried cutting the video down to transition along with the song which is Pride by Kendrick Lamar. The song is a hip hop and psychedelic continuous loop with a really good beat. Every time the beat of the drums goes off or any other effects are heard in the song there will be a jump cut going to a new shoot. The commercial its self is more of a montage of vans products. We start off at the rails doing a panoramic shot leading to all the shirts placed on it. The pan shot moves from left to right.
Then we go to a zoom-in shot of the Vans on top of stairs. Afterwords a zoom into a vans logo shirt with an older vintage theme to it. Then a shot of Lucas throwing up some of the shirts from a higher angle that leads to another zoomed-in shot.

The two shots afterwords featured were close up shots of vans logos. Multiple wide shots and more jump cuts after that there is a medium shot. The medium shot is me sitting down on my skateboard in front of this artwork in front of the school.  Lucas zoomed into the box logo which said "vans" on it so we got a close up of that as well. We managed to get more shots like a wide-angle shot of the school and a close up on a "no skateboarding sign" located at the bus loop. We captured a medium close up of myself on the flying L. Then our very final shot was myself skating across the screen. When I get to the middle of the screen the vans logo shows up on the screen with a "wipe in" transition that I reversed for it to flip from one side to the other while I'm passing through it to make it look as if I'm "wiping" it onto the screen. Then the logo continues to stay on the screen for about three to seconds. The commercial is a total of twenty-five seconds and even though we didn't completely stick to the storyboard we created something we both enjoyed. While still executing a couple of shots we wanted to in the storyboard.
