Editing the commercial

Today In class we were told we were going to film for 30 minutes and edit. But once we got into class Ms. M announced that due to the computers being old and messed up we couldn’t do it. The class and I weren’t quite sure if it was the program itself not working or the computers acting up. But either way we couldn’t use them to edit. My partner and I Lucas looked forward to editing. We’ve edited in the past for our own reasons individually. My reason is when I was younger I used to be a YouTuber: I posted all types of videos and before 2016 I absolutely hated editing. I eventually gave YouTube a break and started posting again in the seventh and eighth grades. Around that time I loved editing so much I was in shock. Editing has always been super time consuming, stressful, and even annoying at times. But all in all the ending result of anything your editing is always a reward. All the hard work and effort you put in finally pays off and you're so much more proud of yourself when you're done.

Going back to what we’ve done in class we’ve created our storyboards. We’ve also filmed all the shots needed to begin the editing process. Due to the computers being older models and not up to date. We had to update the computers and were not allowed to use them for editing. We could only use the computers to put our work on google drive or a USB drive. I tried opening my google photos and dragging the file into google photos but that didn’t work I attempted doing that for another 10 times probably but nothing was happening. I tried opening the computer tab on google photo to upload pictures. That was the only way the videos would have actually saved onto the gallery. I had to repeat this step multiple times which was absolutely terrible. But the worst part was checking which scenes and shots I was missing.

I eventually had all of my shots saved onto my Google gallery. So now I do not have to worry about any of my footage getting lost. This allows Lucas and I to relax and not have to think about any footage gone missing. Lucas and I also have an idea of what we want our theme and aesthetic of the commercial to be. Due to the fact that it’s a Vans commercial I thought it would be cool to make it have a vintage theme to it. Have an old camcorder or vintage filter to it to make it have a better overall look to it. We also have the song we want to use for the commercial picked out. Our only form of audio in the commercial will be music. Neither Lucas or I will be doing voice-overs or speaking in the commercial. Overall today was sadly very disappointing. I hope we can start editing soon and have the computers working well enough to produce quality content that everyone will enjoy.

Filming the commercial

Today I will be discussing the filming process and what my partner and I did through the seventy minutes of filming. The very first thing we did was fill out a sheet to get the equipment and pass so we could film. While Lucas was filling everything out and waiting in line to get everything I went ahead and changed my outfit to clothing that was more fit for the commercial. Once Lucas and I were finished with that we had two duffle bags. Both duffle bags were filled with shoes and clothing and decided to fit all of it into Lucas’s so we would only have to hold the duffle bag, tripod, camera, and skateboard. We started going to the front of the auditorium. There we started setting up the camera onto the tripod. We began by filming Lucas stand on the board and zoom into the shoes. He had van shoes on and we thought it would be cool to have a shot like that. We unfortunately didn’t follow the first scene from the storyboard because our subject was filming his commercial.

We started by filming at low angles and close-ups on the shoes to begin. We took multiple shots like that and tracking shots as well. One we finished we went to a higher level where we could film. We shot tracking shots there too along with shots where the subject skating into the camera. After that we moved towards the rails where we set up all the shirts we had so we could film close-ups and panoramic shots. We plan on using those shots to do jump-cut transitions in the commercial. After filming the rail scene Lucas and I then moved to the flying L on the senior patio. There we laid down clothing, shoes, and skateboard on the wings and horizontal part of the “L”. I sat down on the vertical part of the “L” and started to just do a plethora of shots. We did high angles, close-ups, and a tilt.

From there we moved to the front of the school where we filmed a wide-angle. That was the final shot we plan on using at the end of the commercial. We skated from one side of the screen to the other and we were there for about five minutes. One we filmed the scene that we needed a security officer proceeded to come up to my partner and I and took my board. He said it’s a Florida misdemeanor and it’s illegal to skate in a public area. I then told him I was in the Cambridge AICE magnet filming a project and he continued to say the same thing over again. He fixated on the fact that I was filming skateboarding and how “when I post it on social media everyone is going to start breaking the rules”. I told him I wasn’t posting anything on a public platform but of course I need to publish it on this blog. But I don’t expect anyone not in AICE media to read any of my blogs. I ask the security guard if I could get it back because I wasn’t just doing it to violate any type of rules I was simply doing it for an important assignment. Luckily he gave it back and aI didn’t have to go through the hassle of trying to get it back from the administration with my parent. After all that happened I told Lucas We should put the board down and some clothing pieces as well. We put the skateboard and supplies down in media and decided to film the “no skateboarding” sign just because Vans tends to post commercials “breaking the rules” which we technically did (on accident). Once we finished that we walked a little farther to the track where we set up a couple of clothing pieces on the bleachers and filmed a birds-eye angle. We only filmed that for about a minute because the camera sadly died on us but we got back to class at just the right time and dumped the files onto the computer

Storyboard

So for our commercial we are starting it off by filming a computer, we would have liked to film a vintage tv but we will have to work with it.  we start off recording an old computer.
The computer is going to be playing the first couple of scenes. We will be zooming into the computer and at around five seconds the footage will fully be on the screen and the computer will be gone.
We are starting the first scene by recording a rail right in front of the auditorium where there is flat ground. Flat ground is important for skating because it's smooth and allows tricks to be executed efficiently. We will be filming the rail then slowly zooming into the subject wearing the merchandise. The subject will then do a couple of tricks on the skateboard. We will proceed to slowly track and move the camera to a low angle. We will then perform a panoramic shot around the subject's body till we get to its shirt.

The pan will end with the box vans logo premiered on the subject's body.
Throughout the next couple of seconds there will be multiple jump cuts and scenes rapidly coming in and out. The jump cuts will be between two scenes mainly. The first scene is the skating it’s self which will showcase vans shoes and a skateboard. The second scene is a dutch shot of multiple items of clothing from vans. The items will include t-shirts, shoes, long sleeve shirts, and some pieces with "a vans aesthetic". The second scene is going to be filmed at two locations around campus. One is on the Flying L in the senior patio. The senior patio is located at the front of the school.
And the main stairs which have quotes on them and lead up to AICE media studies.

My partner and I will also be putting the apparel on and take medium shots. The shots will show all the shirts we’ve brought as well as the shoes. It will be filmed on the 3rd-floor entrance of either building 21 or 17. Both buildings tend to have a lot of good lighting on the 3rd floor because it’s not blocked off by any other buildings. The last scene will be at the point of entry to our school. At the point of entry there is this very cool art piece that doesn’t get much attention. Our subject will end off the commercial by riding its board from one side of the shot to the other. That scene will be filmed in a long shot. And once the subject is halfway through the end of the shot that when the vans logo will appear. The logo will be black and show up from half of that shot to the end. And that will conclude our commercial.

Editing Lesson Blog

Today in media studies we went through a lot of information. We went through the process of checking out a camera and returning it, the editing process, and learning how to use the tripod.
Ms. M let us know that we have to use the same computer throughout the editing process
So that we don’t lose footage or any editing clip. If the team member that has his login to edit and has the account used for editing if he or she is absent the team must know his login to ensure they can continue editing. With the computers used in our class the computers do not read SD cards but they do collect information on the desktop its self.  To start editing you have to put the SD card into the SD card reader then look for your footage in “DCIM”. If the footage isn’t in DCIM your gonna go to private, AVCHD then click on the next folder then go to your stream where you can find all your footage. Highlight the videos you have then drag them into the footage you have on your SD to your folder in order to DUMP your footage. Everyone has to dump footage before turning in your camera. Once you get into the program cancel all the ads. Import the footage from your folder to pinnacle studios or the editing software you are using. Click on the Plus sign and your media footage should pop up. Ms. M said we should always import footage into your desktop to make sure you don’t lose anything.

She showed us the basics of editing. She began explaining what raw footage is and modifying it to the product you want at the end of your post-production period. When you put footage from your camera onto your computer that is dumping. You should then import any footage you’d like to edit and choose what you want to do, you can split-screen, cut, and even use transitions. She showed us how to use coloration, saturation, and visibility. When we film during the day at school if we’d like to make the footage darker as if it was night time you can always change a couple things. You can lower visibility and saturation accordingly to have a realistic look to your footage. Ms.M  showed us how to delete the footage and make it come along as well.

Ms.M taught us how to use a tripod. She showed us how to close and open the legs of the tripod in and out. Doing so will allow your tripod to be higher or lower from the ground. She Brought the legs out and then began placing the camcorder on the tripod. She showed us how to take out the top piece of the tripod off and on by flicking a switch on the tripod and removing the camera from the top piece. She then showed us how to close the tripod and the camera’s properly.

Vans Commercial Planning

Planning is a crucial factor in making this commercial.

Props we will use for this commercial are
-Vans Apparel (Shoes, Shirts, Belts, etc)
-A Skateboard

Costumes I and my partner will use will be "Skate Apparel" and Vans Clothing to advertise the clothing.

The Schedule is as followed
-Planning 10/10
-Making the storyboard 10/14
-Shooting the scenes 10/21
-Editing/Post-production 10/23

Location
I and my partner will be filming on campus at Fort Lauderdale High, in front of the auditorium to shoot our skate scenes.

Backup Plan
If it starts to rain we can shoot on different locations around campus underneath shelter/roofing to not ruin any equipment.

If I or my partner doesn't show up to the day that we film, we will get somebody to help us film our scenes.

This is the planning for our commercial project.

Research Blog: Commercial Conventions

In my commercial my partner Lucas, and I are doing a vans commercial. Vans is an American manufacturer of skateboarding shoes and related based in Santa Ana, California and owned by VF Corporation. Vans are sold in many retail stores like journeys, Zumiez, Robert Wayne, and Footlocker.  Since vans is a skating company, vans host many skating events for all types of skater. And even sponsors professional skaters for competitions and commercials. Vans also sells apparel and accessories such as beanies, hats, socks, stickers, and key chains.

My partner and I plan on using clothing and shoes for this commercial. We will be doing many zoom in shots as well as longs shots to show the complete subject. We hope to film an extreme close up to show the logo on the back of the shoe and the vans shirt logo as well. We want the commercial to look as authentic to Vans commercials as possible while having our own spin to it.

                                                   most commercials have the following:

  • Vans shoes (usually classics or new design)
  • Van apparel
  • Van competitions
  • usually has "psychedelic" themed commercials with creative, layered shots and quick transition shots
  • Usually uses rock music to appeal and gravitate their customer's attention and have them hooked to the commercial and product
  • Skateboard
  • They focus heavily on the shoes and van products and are consistently zooming into the product
  • Vans Logo at the end of the commercial
(here's a link to videos Vans usually creates to promote new shoes   https://www.instagram.com/p/B2hmAQBBTJ5/?utm_source=ig_web_button_share_sheet )

Media Studies Introductory

Hi, I am Alanys this is my new blog for AICE Media Studies period 6. Throughout the year I will be blogging regularly to write about what's happening during filming throughout extended periods of time. I will hopefully also be blogging throughout the editing process as well.

About me, I was born in San Juan, Puerto Rico by a Puerto Rican mother and a Dominican dad on December fifteenth, 2004.  I have two older siblings a twenty-one-year-old sister and a 19-year-old brother. I moved to Florida when I was one and have grown up here ever since. I attended Nob Hill Elementary, Bair middle, and now Fort Lauderdale High School. I plan on getting my Cambridge diploma and going to college. I am currently taking three AICE classes which are Global Perspectives, English General Paper, and the class I am currently writing this in, Media Studies. I also have Geometry, Biology, Film Production, and Spanish 3.

I hope to major in Film production, drama, or cybersecurity in college but I mainly want to work in the entertainment field. I would also like to learn about pharmaceuticals like Fentanyl, methamphetamine, Vicodin, heroin, and oxycodone because I find it interesting how addiction works and how addicts deal with drug abuse. Also the fact the person can be an automatic addict after one injection or snort is insane to me. My hobbies include Skateboarding, playing guitar, watching sitcoms like the office, parks and recreation, and Brooklyn 99. But that is just a little bit of who I am
I hope those who are reading this will enjoy my updates and post, until next time.
